Governor Bob, First Lady Lion Suzie, Lion Brian Rountree and I had the privilege of assisting the San Jose Pioneer Lions in their sixth year of feeding the homeless at City Team Ministries in San Jose. In addition to providing these folks with a delicious homemade meal of Korean specialties, including Chicken Teriyaki, noodles, rice, kimchi and egg rolls, accompanied by fruit and beverages, the Pioneer Lions also made available donated shoes, clothing and blankets. Sunnyvale Host provided some sleeping bags and space blankets. The Pioneer Lions have performed this service project specifically at the onset of cold weather every year since they were chartered, so that they could help equip these folks for the impending cold weather, above and beyond providing them a meal for the night. Perhaps most impressive was the participation of many of the club members’ children and grandchildren. One of the club officers told me that this is one of the reasons for choosing this kind of service project, so that their children understand how difficult life is for some people; the hope is that the kids will better appreciate and be thankful for what they have. The kids were not out of view in the back kitchen prepping food, either. No, they were on the front lines serving it up. We adults were backing them up, refreshing their steam trays and keeping them stocked. Bravo to the Pioneer Lions for their service and thanks for letting us help out!
